2-Ethyl Hexanol
High-purity chemical intermediate widely used in plasticizer production, solvent applications, and specialty chemical synthesis
Product Overview
2-Ethyl Hexanol (2-EH, CAS 104-76-7) is a branched-chain primary alcohol with ≥99.6% purity, serving as the most important raw material for plasticizer production worldwide. As the key feedstock for manufacturing DOP, DOTP, and other phthalate and terephthalate plasticizers, 2-EH is fundamental to the flexible PVC industry. With density 0.831-0.833 g/cm³, acid content ≤0.01%, and sulfuric acid color test ≤25 (platinum-cobalt), our 2-EH meets the exacting specifications of major plasticizer producers. Beyond plasticizer manufacturing, it finds applications in solvent formulations, coatings, and as a chemical intermediate for specialty syntheses including esters, acrylates, and agricultural chemicals.
Application Details
In plasticizer production, 2-EH is the primary feedstock for esterification with phthalic anhydride (producing DOP), terephthalic acid (producing DOTP), and other acid components. Its branched-chain structure is critical — it imparts the low-temperature flexibility and processing characteristics that make these plasticizers effective. As a solvent, 2-EH dissolves resins, oils, and dyes effectively, finding use in coatings and specialty formulations. In chemical synthesis, it serves as a precursor for 2-ethylhexyl acrylate (used in adhesives and sealants), 2-ethylhexyl nitrate (diesel fuel additive), and various specialty esters for agricultural and pharmaceutical applications.
Product Comparison
2-EH vs n-Octanol: 2-Ethyl Hexanol (branched C8 alcohol) is the dominant plasticizer feedstock due to its branched structure, which produces plasticizers with superior low-temperature flexibility and processing characteristics. n-Octanol (linear C8 alcohol) produces linear esters with different performance profiles — better UV stability but poorer low-temperature flexibility. 2-EH is produced in much larger volumes (global capacity ~6M tons/year) and is significantly more cost-effective. For plasticizer production, 2-EH is the industry standard; for surfactant and specialty applications, n-Octanol may be preferred.
